Milky Way For Beginners Photography Workshop
If you are new to Milky Way photography or a novice who wants to improve their skills, join Photographers Trail Notes for a fun and educational workshop as we explore the wonderful dark skies around Moab, UT, including Arches NP, Canyonland NP, and Dead Horse Point State Park.
Your Workshop Guide
This six-day, five-night workshop is designed to introduce you to the wonderful world of Milky Way photography, including the correct equipment, camera settings, composition, capture techniques, photographing in the dark of night, and image processing.
We will explore various Milky Way photography techniques, including taking single images, capturing multiple images with separate exposures for the sky and foreground, and stacking multiple shots to reduce noise. We will also utilize a star tracker, which will be available on location for participants to use. Additionally, we will cover blue hour blending and other composite blending techniques. The workshop will include classroom-style sessions dedicated to image processing
The workshop will provide both on-site and classroom training during the day, followed by opportunities to practice your newly acquired skills under the stunning dark skies of Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Dead Horse Point State Park. You'll receive hands-on training in an area so dark that you can barely see your hand in front of your face.
This workshop is limited to just four (4) participants, allowing for focused attention to help you learn how to photograph the Milky Way and capture breathtaking images in this incredible setting.
While Milky Way photography will be the main focus of the workshop, we will also have opportunities to photograph sunsets and sunrises on certain days if time permits.
Physical Difficulty
Three locations on our itinerary will require participants to hike a round trip distance of 2 to 3.5 miles on uneven terrain, which includes moderate scrambling and some uphill sections. It is therefore essential that participants are in good physical health and have good mobility.
