SEPTEMBER MILKY WAY AROUND MOAB
The area around Moab (Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, and Dead Horse Point) offers excellent opportunities to photograph the Milky Way, thanks to some of the darkest skies in the American Southwest.
September is an ideal time to capture the Milky Way, as the Galactic Core becomes visible right after Astronomical Twilight ends, which is around 9 p.m. Imagine photographing a great sunset, waiting a little while, then shooting the Milky Way before getting a good night's sleep.
Additionally, in September, the Milky Way appears more vertical in the sky and rises in the south/southwest, providing new locations for shooting compared to other times of the year.
Your Workshop Guide
Our six-day, five-night photography workshop will help you make the most of your time spent in the dark skies around Moab.
Potential shooting locations include Delicate Arch, Double Arch, North Window, Turret Arch, Landscape Arch, Marlboro Point, Dead Horse Point, and the Green River Overlook.
In addition, during the afternoons and at sunset, we will have opportunities to photograph Fiery Furnace, Balanced Rock, and Park Avenue. If we get to bed early one night, we'll also visit the magical glow at Mesa Arch.
The workshop will offer on-site training during the day, followed by opportunities to practice your Milky Way photography skills under the spectacular dark skies at Arches and Canyonlands National Park, as well as at Dead Horse Point. In these locations, the darkness will be so profound that you will be unable to see your hand in front of your face.
We will cover a variety of Milky Way photography techniques, including capturing single images, taking multiple images with separate exposures for the sky and foreground, stacking multiple shots to reduce noise, utilizing a star tracker (which will be provided to participants), and blending techniques. The workshop will also include several days of classroom-style processing sessions.
The workshop is limited to just four (4) participants, allowing for focused attention to help you learn how to photograph the Milky Way and capture stunning images in this incredible setting.
While Milky Way photography will be the main focus, we will also have the opportunity to photograph sunsets each day and a few sunrises when time permits.
